A protest against Sharia law in America? I am not sure if it is clueless, or if it is a genius plan, but either way, the effect is the same: they left those of us who stand for equality with no good response. Counter-protesting could seem like standing up for Sharia law, which I oppose passionately; but I would want to counter-protest their racist Islamophobia and the ridiculousness of the whole event.

The whole idea of the protest is stupid. There is no risk of Sharia law being implemented in the U.S. No community wants it, and even if one did, it would be blocked by the fact that Sharia law violates The Constitution, federal law, and state law.

What we do need to protest is all of the nut jobs trying to legislate Biblical law and outdated religious mores. That is a real threat to freedom and equality continuously made by the right Biblical law is little, if at all, better than Sharia law. It is sexist. It is homophobic. It not only promotes but demands killing people for ridiculous reasons such as:

• Working on the Sabbath
• Adultery
• Fornication
• Insulting your parents
• Homosexuality
• Being a non-believer
• Blasphemy

Religious texts may or may not be a source or morality (an argument for a different day), but they are not a valid source of law in a modern, free society.

In the end, the silly anti-Sharia protest can happily be called a failure. Many cities had attendance of less than one people (tiny by post-Trump protest standards), and some cities had many times the number of counter-protesters than protesters.
